“Can the arts play a role in saving the Great Salt Lake?

To See Beyond Our Time, by Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, was created in response to the lake's historically low water levels and the impact that is having on the lake's ecosystem and our air.

The co-creators met with a lake scientist, a member of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone, a lake advocate — and even a member of the Great Salt Lake Collaborative — as they developed the work.

Such research ensures "the work reflects the perspectives of the people who are deeply tied to the issue," said artistic director Daniel Charon, who co-created the work with theatre director Alexandra Harbold.

"Dance can speak in its own unique way to highlight the immediacy of this moment," he added.

I designed five youth productions over two seasons and mentored high school students interested in theater and lighting design. Epic Theatre Ensemble partners with at-risk schools in NYC and works with students studying classics and staging performances of their work. This program was the recipient of the National Arts & Humanities Coming Up Taller Award in 2009, presented by Michelle Obama.
